Low level musical draw GALLUCCI finally comes out of retirement to start their career!

Gallucci, the band you think you might've heard of, but unsure it was for a good reason, delivers new music in a "two sides of the coin" fashion on 'Click to Switch'

Post-Joe Lally, G'cci found itself in a brief period of creative difference, with each brother petitioning heavily for their own version of the band to reign supreme across the land. After much sibling discourse (yelling), a grand idea was struck upon, previously known by Mamma NicNac as 'You put your nose in that corner, and yours in that one over there' - Thus allowing the 'love supream' to prosper, seperately, but as one, together, forever.

So, to document & celebrate the band's existence as a truly two-headed beast - Gallucci, being Jacob & Timothy Nicastri of Sydney, Australia - hereby present their new album 'Click to Switch' to the public ear proper.......

On this very same album, you'll eventually locate contributions from Minutemen/fIREHOSE/Stooges bassman Mike Watt, Stooges/Violent Femmes hornman Steve Mackay and ABC Radio Renegade Tony Barrell amongst many other good people - and of course, there's a whole bunch of guitars.....

Gallucci, a band of infinite stupidity, and inconsistent appearance does "something" once more....

Very sad to write that our friend, broadcaster Tony Barrell passed away last night peacefully at his home in Balmain. Tony was 70 years old. Only yesterday I was sitting next to him chatting away, just after he gave a masterclass-thing about his great radio doco making. Tony and Gallucci visited the White Bay Power Station a few months back, gathering voice material for the next (eventual) Gallucci album..... Sad to think we'll never get to do that tune live with him, but glad that his words are on tape for us to share with you, in time.

The recently icy relationship between architects and skateboarders (think knobbly skatestoppers on building ledges) may now be thawing somewhat, and in of all places, cold cold Oslo in Norway, where skateboarding was totally illegal between 1979 and 1989. It's not just reverting back to the good old days when architects were blissfully unaware of the terranical perfection they were creating either - Some are now misdirecting their employers on the purpose of a building, and consulting skateboarders on things like surface and flow. The Oslo Opera House above is one hell of an example. Take a look at this 2008 article from Wired Magazine.

Skateboarding (vaguely borrowing the words of Ian Mackaye in Mike Vallely's film Drive), is about redefining. If a kid can redefine a lifeless gutter or a uninspired parking lot into a place for artistic/physical expression, they can take those skills and redefine themselves and the their entire world along the way. Very interesting to think of that not even being necessary.... but someone else will again redefine I'm sure. In 1980 Mike Watt asked 'who makes the definitions anyway?' - An important question.

San Pedro's own Thunderbroom Sailor, Mike Watt has been back in town on Stooges BDO business in the last few days, so we went out to chow some squid and also recorded a marathon interview spiel for a radio doc on his post-fIREHOSE works. It was great to see him after so long since our gig together in '06..... We even got our ugly mugs onto Watt's Hootpage tour diary too (scroll down some). Chuffed!

James Dibble, the original ABC Television newsreader (from 1956-83) and possessor of award-winning diction, died this week aged 87. The reason for your continued interest in James here is that he played an unlikely part in Russell Guy's gonzo radio mind-bend 'What's Rangoon to You is Grafton to Me' which first aired on Double J in 1978. One of the most requested radio programs ever made, and a prince of the bootleg cassette trade-routes of the 80's, you can now download an MP3 of it here. Tony Barrell told me that Dibble couldn't make time to come back to the studio and finish the second half of the script, that's the accidentally genius reason you hear Dibble and Russell Guy woven together in voice as one blur in the program........

G'cci Jumps!....... and very quickly gets very wet. This is the original bungee spot in NZ, the Kawarau Bridge. This historic suspension bridge (which I fell off) was built in 1880, desgned by Harry Paisley Higginson. The schist masonry towers have a superb affinity with the surroundings and the main wooden truss provides a strong visual link across the 90 metre gap. A thoroughly well-designed structure, it's still showing its sound construction 130+ years later. How do I know all this? Rather than watching others jump while I waited, I read the detailed bronze plaque maybe 50 times.....

Claude Monet, a refined dresser, gardener and well-bearded individual, really began to hit his stride artistically from about 42. Moving with his family to Giverny, Northern France in the Spring of 1883, he began planting and perfecting huge gardens which sprawled their property, delivering endless inspirato for his 'series' works. Inside their home, his first studio in Giverny (above, later as a sitting room) was quite a spot, with it's tiers of impressionist beauty edging at the distant ceiling (Check out another flick for height). The photo of himself on the desk is also a nice touch - even he must have appreciated that great beard....

In the 1960's, the West African country of Mali began enjoying it's restored independence after 70 years of French colonialism. To resurrect the musical traditions, the new government created a stack of so-called regional orchestras. These groups then suprisingly began integrating European & American instruments and electrified sounds, as well as popular Cuban salsa feels into the rich & historic repertoire of Malian traditional music. I guess they didn't want the kids to bypass their own culture and history just because there weren't any wild surf guitar solos in the tunes. I can also hear some strange musical links between this kinda stuff and 1950's Calypso music....

Next time you visit Canberra, make sure you clear 15 minutes in the schedule to go to The National Gallery to sit in front of Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles. There is even a comfy leather bench seat right in front of it, close enough to study the detail, and distant enough to the appreciate the size. It's also worth noting that when this painting was purchased by the Whitlam Government in 1973 for $1.3million (the highest amount ever paid for a modern painting at the time) it caused significant stirring as to why we'd spent a fortune on a big splashy mess by a barefoot drunk........ why indeed! During the 1960's & 70's 'Pistol' Pete Maravich was a miracle ball handler and flawless shooter. His basketball training began as a small child with relentless hours of dribbling drills and shooting practice every single day. He still holds the highest scoring average in NCAA history of 44.2 ppg (had there been a 3-point line then, a mind-blowing 57 ppg). After 10 years as a prime-time NBA showman, an injury forced his retirment and began an unfortunate spiral into alcoholism. He then became a recluse, exploring yoga, Hinduism, macrobiotics, studying Catholic Trappist, Thomas Merton and even taking an interest in UFOlogy. In 1982, he became a Christian and began traveling the US sharing his new found faith. Sadly, exactly 21 years ago today, Maravich died suddenly during a church pickup game because of a previously undetected congenital heart defect. His final words, spoken less than a minute before he collapsed, were "I feel great." You've gotta admit, he really did it all.....

In the mid-to-late 90's the Nels Cline Trio recorded 3 great (though yes, slightly obscure) albums - Ground, Chest & Sad. Together they represent a great period in Nels' guitar work. His very unique strumming has also been heard on some great projects over the years with Mike Watt, Thurston Moore and plenty more too....

The BBC World Service (if you don't know) is a shortwave radio service, which means it can cover some very serious miles - hence the word 'World'. During the late 90's and early 00's, wildly prolific musician & producer Bill Laswell was invited into the tape vaults of Miles Davis, Bob Marley & Carlos Santana to do what he dubbed 'Reconstruction & Mix Translation'. Basically remixing their (generally lesser known) work into new albums, re-imagining & blurring the sounds from one recording into another. The resulting albums, Panthalassa, Dreams of Freedom & Divine Light respectively, were subject to reviews at both ends of the scale (including the occassional accusation of creative blasphemy), but are nonetheless important, awesome listening & totally worthy of your ear-time.

Kermit Roosevelt, Jr. not only had a great name, but was a James Bond-like CIA man - key in removing Mohammed Mossadeq from power in Iran in 1953. In Operation Ajax he firstly put 80% of the Iranian Press onto his payroll, writing daily stories calling Mossadeq a British agent, a Jew and a homosexual. Next, he hired a gang leader known as 'Shaban The Brainless' to run the streets with his mob, smashing shops, firing guns into Mosques and being generally violent around the place - all the while yelling "We love Communism and we love Mossadeq!" Not feeling this was sufficient, he then hired another mob to attack the first mob, putting the country into a state of total chaos. All of this and many more insane exploits (see CIA document: Overthrow of Premier Mossadeq Of Iran) set the scene for the coup d'état and re-installed the Shah - which eventually led to the Iranian Revolution. What a mess!

Saved By Curb! In 2004, Curb Your Enthusiasm was credited with helping clear a Los Angeles man, Juan Catalan of first-degree murder. Catalan maintained his innocence, saying he was at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game on May 12, 2003, at the time of the slaying. Coincidentally, during the Dodgers vs. Braves game an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm was being shot, and outtake footage was found showing Juan Catalan with his daughter at Dodger Stadium. Larry David later commented in a New Yorker article, "I tell people that I've now done one decent thing in my life. Albeit inadvertently." This post is to commemorate one of the most excellent moments of the Jenni-Tour, with a visit to Bondi Beach Skatepark for a midnight gig, Nov 23/24th 2006. A confused but appreciative crowd soon gathered as loud sounds were made by Gallucci, unfortunately this led to the police paying a visit, with one officer obliging for the customary yanking of the power cable from the jenni (why didn't we just hard-wire that thing?). During this period G'cci played a number of skateparks; Marulan, Bondi, Prahran, Maroubra, Fernside/Waterloo, Lumeah, Moorebank, St Ives..... I think a few more too.

"Melbourne Water can only enforce the by-law if there is an 'entry prohib' sign which kids mostly snag for their bedroom door. We rang Melbourne's 'Dob in a Drainer' hotline to get a recorded message about calling back in office hours. Entering service or steam tunnels can be risky but just leave the place, including entrance and exit as found. Potentially, the worst trouble we have gotten into was back in the 80's when the fed police came to the door with a telephone book sized file on us, asking for the fake name our p.o.box was in. We told them the guy moved to Perth. They asked 'was he into dungeons and dragons?"

At 5'7" Spud Webb was one of the shortest players to ever lace up in the NBA. With 12 seasons from 1985-98, the zinger of his career was winning the '86 NBA Slam Dunk Contest by defeating defending champion & Atlanta Hawks teammate Dominique Wilkins who dunked it out with Jordan in '85. Apparently he'd never seen Spud dunk, and Webb told him he hadn't prepared anything or practiced.... He apparently first dunked a 10ft ring when standing just 4'11'.

In early 1983, this single flick 'Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend' by Peter Dombrovskis became incredibly influential over the Australian public - to the point where it may have decided the federal election that year in favour of Bob Hawke and the Labor Party. With the discussion about flooding the Franklin River in Tasmania raging and tipping toward building the proposed dam, this amazing time-lapse photograph appeared full-page in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age with the caption 'Could you vote for the party that would destroy this?'. I'm pretty sure I know which lever I would have pulled...... had I been alive.

Our first album, Soca Punk! You can download it here - but we are really asking that you don't. This fair and reasonable review from Skratch magazine in the US comminicates it well;

"Confusion about Gallucci will eternally reign after listening and researching this band. You're left asking yourself, "Is this a joke? Are you serious?" Musically, this band is absolute chaos, as they create a mixture of grindcore and rock, trying to come across as art. Professionally, Gallucci is a trainwreck. On their disastrous Website, the band claims, "We recorded this album to find band members." So why am I wasting my time? Well, it's my job as a SKRATCH writer to look at all material objectively...but this has to be the biggest piece of wasted plastic to ever enter my mailbox. Avoid this band. -Luke Skywalker"

But, you will find Andy Cowland (from Further) on bass and Clint Hyndman (from Something For Kate) on drums - so I guess that's something. A beginning I guess - Amateur but Energetic. Certainly better than staying at home anyway.
